Did you know that....
1. Meyer Lemons are a hybrid of regular lemons and mandarin oranges. They were introduced to the United States from Beijing, China, in 1908, by Frank Meyer of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Meyer Lemons are sweeter and less acidic than regular lemons and have a seasonal availability (December-May). The fruit is very fragile, so it is not widely grown by commercial farmers, and it is hard to find in most grocery stores. You can, however, find them in specialty stores during the growing seasons.
2. Meyer Lemons are mainly grown in California, Florida and Texas in the United States. California is the biggest producer of Meyer Lemons, growing about 95% of all lemons in the country.
Meyer Lemons have a sweeter and more floral flavor than standard lemons and are often used in desserts, savory dishes and cocktails.
3. Meyer Lemons have about 25 calories each. They are rich in vitamin C and folate, which help to boost the immune system and reduce inflammation. Like Cara Cara oranges, Meyer Lemons can also stimulate collagen production.
Meyer lemons are also a good source of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Additionally, Meyer lemons contain two specific bioflavonoids that are linked to a lower risk of heart disease, cancer and various other ailments. These compounds are found in the Meyer lemon peel.
