1. Cara Cara Oranges are a type of Blood Oranges that are a result of the cross-pollination of a Washington Navel Orange and a Brazilian Bahia Navel Orange. They were found in 1976 in Venezuela. The orange didn’t reach the US markets until the late '80s. They were only sold in upscale specialty and farmers markets.
Cara Cara Oranges are different from navel oranges in their interior appearance. They look like grapefruits inside and have no seeds. This is what makes Cara Cara Oranges unique.
2. Cara Cara Oranges are mainly grown in Central and Southern California in the United States. The harvest season is very short. It starts in late December/early January and ends in early spring.
Cara Cara Oranges have a sweet, tart like low acidic juice that doesn’t turn bitter when exposed to oxygen like traditional navel oranges. (Source: Various).
3. A regular size Cara Cara orange has about 80 calories. It’s a great source of the antioxidant’s vitamin A and C. They are also a good source of folate, potassium and fiber. Cara Cara oranges contain a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. Lycopene is the component that gives Cara Cara oranges their color. This beautiful color is also present in our extract.
